Craftsmanship and friendship in the workplace: a conversation with Alex

At Van der Ende Valve Services, we take pride in our employees, many of whom have been with us for years, contributing to our success as the longest-standing valve overhaul company in the Netherlands. This year, we celebrate several special anniversaries, including those of Klaas, Willem, Alex, Erik and Kitty — respectively marking 20, 20, 15, 12.5, and 12.5 years of service. We spoke with Alex, who celebrated his 15-year anniversary this summer, about his work and experiences within our team.

From disassembly to all-round craftsman

Alex joined Van der Ende Valve Services through an old acquaintance. "I had heard good things about the company through the grapevine, so I started in the disassembly department," he says. This is where he learned to take apart valves. Alex explains, "If you don’t know how something comes apart, you can’t assemble it. It’s that simple." After seven years in disassembly, he moved over to assembly. Nowadays, he works both in the workshop and on-site at customer locations, including in the Rotterdam port area. "Here, you really have a meaningful job. We indirectly ensure that factories keep running. Without properly functioning valves, for example, no beer can be brewed or toothpaste produced," Alex says with a smile.

The power of teamwork

"The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. We get along like friends, help each other whenever needed, and most of all, we have a lot of fun," Alex says. "For example, we treat each other to fries while on the job. I've worked at many companies and met many colleagues in my life, but here, it’s really top-notch."

The fact that we don't work on weekends also contributes to a good work-life balance. "I really enjoy that we wrap everything up on Friday afternoons and head into the weekend with a drink together."

A range of opportunities in the pipeline.

"It really doesn't matter if you went to special education or have a college diploma. If you have technical insight and enjoy working with your hands, you're more than welcome here. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Your colleagues are always ready to help and answer your questions,” Alex shares as an encouraging message for newcomers in the process industry.

At Van der Ende Valve Services, there is room for growth and development, regardless of your background. Alex is living proof that with the right attitude, you can grow into a well-rounded professional. "I enjoy continuously learning new things and helping others in their development. At Van der Ende Valve Services, I get that opportunity."
